What is SuperComputer?

A SuperComputer is one of the types of Computer. A SuperComputer has the capabilities of performing 200 quadrillions of operations in one second. Usually, Supercomputers are used for scientific and engineering that handle massive databases.

Currently, there are some well-known supercomputers available in the world that do tasks at extremely high speed as compared to other computers.

How Does Supercomputer work?

The supercomputer has multiple central processing units (CPU). These CPUs have a group of nodes and memory. Supercomputers contain thousands of nodes that communicate each other to solve problems using parallel processing.

Multiple parallel computers that perform parallel processing are known as Powerful supercomputers. In some cases, Supercomputers are divided into many individual PCs in a different location instead of all CPUs in one location.

What are Supercomputers used for?

Supercomputers perform intensive calculations that cannot be done by a normal computer.

  • Weather Forecasting: A supercomputer is used to predict the weather using the impact of storms and floods.
  • Physical Simulations: Supercomputers make simulations model supernovas and the birth of the universe.
  • Aerodynamics: Supercomputers are used for designing the lowest air drag coefficient.
  • Oil and Gas exploration: In this type, a Supercomputer is used to collect geophysical seismic data in finding and developing oil servers.
  • Molecular Modeling: This is a chemical field, in this field, Supercomputers are used to calculate and analyze the property and structure of Chemical compounds and crystals.
  • Nuclear Fusion: Supercomputers are used to research and build nuclear fusion reactors to drive energy through plasma reactions.
  • Medical Research: A supercomputer is used to find new materials for manufacturing.

  • Supercomputers are used to simulate reality on large scale. Supercomputer functions can also be carried out with cloud computing sometimes. Cloud computing combines the processing power of multiple processors to achieve targeted processing power that is impossible on PC.

Supercomputers and artificial intelligence

Supercomputers frequently run artificial intelligence (AI) programs because they require Supercomputers' performance and processing power. Supercomputers can handle a massive amount of data that AI and machine development use.

Supercomputers are made specifically with AI in mind. For example, Microsoft built a supercomputer to train AI models that work with the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. One more tool is Microsoft natural language generation, Which is a natural language processing model.

Supercomputer future

The supercomputer and high-performance computing (HPC) market is growing as vendors such as Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft. HPC is becoming more essential as AI capabilities in all industries.

The current focus in the supercomputer market is to scale-up processing capabilities. By scaling-up computing processing, new possibilities transcend the most modern supercomputers. Supercomputers are expected to generate an accurate model of the human brain. This would have a massive impact on the neuromorphic computing field.
